عدم‌حمایت بخش تأمین اجتماعی و عدم وجود قوانین بازار کار در اشتغال غیررسمی موجب شده است این انتظار قوت بگیرد که فقر در خانواری که سرپرست آن خانوار اشتغال غیررسمی را برمی‌گزیند بیشتر از خانواری است که سرپرست خانوار در بخش رسمی مشغول به کار است. ازاین‌رو در این پژوهش سعی شد تا اثر اشتغال غیررسمی به همراه سایر عوامل مؤثر بر فقر خانوارها بررسی شود. بدین منظور، با بهره‌گیری از ریز داده‌های طرح هزینه و درآمد خانوارهای شهری و روستایی در سال 1397، نخست، خط فقر بر پایه روش 66 درصد میانگین سرانه­ی مخارج خانوارها به تفکیک استانی برای مناطق شهری و روستایی محاسبه و خانوارهای فقیر شناسایی شد. سپس با توجه به شاخص ارائه‌شده در این پژوهش، نوع اشتغال سرپرستان خانوارها به لحاظ رسمی و غیررسمی مشخص شد. در پردازش اولیه داده‌ها، مقایسه‌ی میان خانوارهایی که سرپرستان شاغل دارند نشان داد که بیشترین میزان فقر مربوط به خانوارهای با سرپرست شاغل در مشاغل غیررسمی است. در ادامه، برآورد الگوی پژوهش با متغیر وابسته‌ی محدود بر مبنای داده‌های شبه تابلویی و به روش اثرات تصادفی در رگرسیون لجستیک در قالبی جداگانه برای 13248 خانوار شهری و 13115 خانوار روستایی در 31 استان انجام شد. نتایج نشان داد اشتغال غیررسمی سرپرست خانوار اثر مستقیم بر احتمال فقر خانوار دارد و میزان تأثیرگذاری در مناطق شهری بیش از مناطق روستایی است. همچنین متغیرهای تحصیلات، سن و جنسیت سرپرست خانوار تأثیر معکوس و متغیرهای مجذور سن و بُعد خانوار با اثری مستقیم بر احتمال فقر خانوار همراه است. بدین نحو که اثرگذاری مطلوب تحصیلات و سن؛ و تأثیر نامطلوب بُعد خانوار بر احتمال فقر خانوارها در مناطق شهری بیش از مناطق روستایی است
