بیمه عمر در جهان کنونی یکی از ابزارهای مهم اقتصادی بوده و استفاده متعددی از آن به عمل می آید. با توجه به نقش پراهمیت بیمه های عمر، این تحقیق، به بررسی ظرفیت بیمه عمر در ایران پرداخته است. برای این منظور، از الگوی خود رگرسیون توضیحی برای داده‌های پانل (Panel ARDL) استفاده‌شده است. سپس برای یک دوره 27 ساله از سال 2016-1990 مدل مناسب برای گروه اول (ایران و کشورهای پیشرو در این صنعت در سال 2015)، گروه دوم (ایران و کشورهایی که ازلحاظ حق بیمه تولیدی در سال 2015 به ایران نزدیک بودند) و گروه سوم (شامل هر دو گروه) تخمین خورد. بر مبنای روش نسیف مقادیر برآورد شده میزان سرانه حق بیمه عمر مربوط به کشور ایران به عنوان میزان بالقوه یا بهینه در هرکدام از گروه ها مورد تحلیل و مقایسه قرارگرفته است. نتایج نشان داد که در هر سه گروه از کشورها، میانگین سرانه حق بیمه عمر بالفعل در ایران از میانگین سرانه حق بیمه عمر بهینه به طور معناداری کمتر است. به طوری که میانگین سرانه حق بیمه عمر بالفعل در مقایسه با بالقوه ایران در مدل گروه اول 46% ، در مدل گروه دوم 42% و در مدل  گروه سوم 44% زیر سطح بهینه یا بالقوه قرار دارد. این نتایج دلالت بر این واقعیت دارد که بیمه عمر در کشور ما از ظرفیت بالقوه بالایی برخوردار است و بخش عظیمی از ظرفیت بیمه عمر در کشور ما هنوز به‌صورت بالفعل درنیامده است.
