Showing 3 results for Paradox
Mohammad Taghavi, Volume 14, Issue 55 (3-2007)
Abstract
In Sufi terminology, Shat'h is a series of aesthetic words expressed involuntarily by mystics during the mystical experiences. There have been multifarious interpretations and judgments concerning these paradoxes ranging from linguistic and epistemic interpretations to religious ones. The Sufis and their opponents have also voiced their diametrically opposing views on this issue. The present study addresses the traditional Sufi doctrines as well as what has been suggested about the various aspects of Shat'h including its ambiguity, its relationship to poetry, and its paradoxicality as argued by the contemporaries. The central issue of concern is whether these aesthetic words carry more emotional or epistemic content. Another impetus behind this research is to probe whether the linguistic expression of these words is indeed a representation of a special form of life. A deep understanding of these words requires a certain affinity and empathy with this form of life without which it's hardly possible to see the hidden meanings of the words. Thus, it is argued that the justification of Shat'h is more importand than its explanation.

Abstract
Paradox is one of the literary techniques in the poetry of the Safavid poets. Hazin-e Lahiji, like so many other poets of that age, employed this technique in his pursuit and showed that "unfamiliar meaning". Paradox is used in the poetry of Hazin-e Lahiji for the purpose of defamiliarization and exoticism. The poet in order to create new implications and subtle and insightful points and also to express mystical notions, Love, free thoughts and ethical arguments has used this literary figure. This article is comprised of some parts. At the beginning and in the theoretical section and literature review, Paradox is defined and its difference from other literary terms, and the state of this literary trope in literature and literary glossaries in the past and present have been discussed. In the practical part, the different kinds of paradox, such as verbal and semantic paradoxes, descriptive and relational compounds have been explained and the features of paradoxes in Hazin’s poetry and synesthesia as a kind of paradox have been discussed.

Abstract
Modern art and literature transformed the foundations of modern aesthetics by paying attention to the negative and unconventional philosophical topics that did not play an important role in classical aesthetics. “Death” is known as one of the central elements of modern literature based on the thoughts of the existentialist and post-structuralist schools. In the modern novel, death plays an essential role in the structure and texture of the story in terms of content, language, and art; and many of the aesthetic aspects of the novel revolve around it. Sadeghi, as one of the leading writers of Iran, made “death” the subject of his novel, “Malakut”, and used many of the literary aspects of his work around this concept. In this research, using the descriptive-analytical method, the aesthetic aspects of death in “Malakut” have been analyzed, which are tied to other components of modern aesthetics. The findings of the study show that the relationship between death and other components of modern aesthetics such as paradox, absence, and ambiguity has led to the importance of the dark aspects of existence as well as the rejection of the work based on the classical and conventional standards of aesthetics.
