Abstract

Microbial analysis of ground water, as the sole supplying water source in many areas, must be evaluated. Because the treatment of water cannot remove all pathogenic bacteria leaked from domestic wastewater, bacterial analysis of Bojnourd groundwater sources was performed. For this reason, membrane filter (MF) technique and Most Probable Number (MPN) method were used to evaluate the microbial quality of the water. Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Enteroccocus faecalis (E. faecalis) were traced as excremental indices. E. coli was detected from three out of six stations and E. faecalis was only isolated from one station. Although molecular techniques are very rapid and exact methods for detection of microbial community and can identify ‘Viable But Not Cultivable’ (VBNC) bacteria, they are unable to make a distinction between living and non-living microorganisms. By means of a standard technique, it is possible to study living and metabolically active microorganisms. Due to the detection of E.coli and E.feacalis in some stations the sanitization of groundwater must be revised to lessen the microbial population in this groundwater.

Abstract

Boujagh National Park, with water ecosystems including Boujagh and Kiashahr wetlands, has an area of approximately 3477.3 hectares. In order to study factors affecting the vegetation in aquatic and wet habitats, 44 releves were implemented in the region. To test the chemical properties of the available water, samples were collected from 22 releves. The results of a two-way species indicator analysis of the modified TWINSPAN suggested that four groups of plants were present in the region. The first group being floating, immersed and submerged and the third and fourth groups being mostly helophytic. The second group of plants grows in areas with sand and mud. The results of comparative DCA analysis of water factors (PH, Depth, P, N, Cl, CO3, Hco3, EC, Na, K) showed a significant correlation between the factors and plant groups and the most important factors influencing the distribution and separation of plants was found to be water depth. In addition, Boujagh and Kiashahr wetlands vegetation map, based on the plant groups, was also prepared.

Abstract

The cement production activities leads to the release of different pollutants into the environment. This research was conducted to study the effects of dust particles released by Behbahan cement factory on the absorption of some nutrient elements and biochemical parameters in dominant herbaceous species grown in this area, including Bromus tectorum, Malva neglecta and Sinapis arvensis. Plant samples were transferred to the laboratory. Then, the concentrations of some nutrient elements, such as Fe, Cu, Zn, K, Mn, P and N, were assayed in plant and soil samples. Moreover, some biochemical parameters, such as photosynthetic pigments, total protein, soluble carbohydrates, proline, relative water content, leaf pH total ascorbate and air pollution tolerance indexes (APTI), were evaluated. Based on these results, it is supposed that three plant species are tolerant to air pollution with an APTI higher than 16. In addition, it seems that the dust released by the cement factory has not led to a toxic accumulation of the elements in the studied plants. The deficiency of Mn and P was determined for three plant species. On the basis of biochemical analysis, it is supposed that these plant species possibly use different strategies to tolerate the pollutants in this area.
