روند سریع و رو به رشد کلان‌شهرها در مسیر مبدّل شدن به شهرهای جهانی و جهان‌شهرها متاثر از هم‌افزایی ابعاد سیاسی، اقتصادی، فرهنگی و علمی جغرافیای سیاسی شهر می‌باشد. شهرها به مثابه یک موجود زنده در مسیر تکاملی خود از نوزادشهر به مادرشهر، کلان‌شهر، شهر جهانی و جهان‌شهر تبدیل می‌شوند. کلان‌شهرها در این فضای رقابتی می‌کوشند تا سطح رقابت‌پذیری خود را با رقبا ارتقا ببخشند. در این پژوهش محقق با شاخص‌سازی برای شهرهای جهانی براساس نظر اندیشمندان جغرافیای سیاسی در زمینه مطالعه پیرامون شهرهای جهانی، عملکرد دو کلان‌شهر تهران و استانبول را از بین کلان‌شهرهای جهان اسلام برپایه معیارها و کارکردهای شهرهای جهانی مقایسه تطبیقی کرده تا بررسی نماید هر یک از این دو شهر در چه جایگاهی از رتبه‌بندی شهرهای جهانی قرار دارند. به همین منظور با استفاده از نرم‌افزار ArcMap نقشه‌های مربوطه تهیه و به روش توصیفی- تحلیلی به بررسی شاخص‌ها و معیارهای عددی موجود پرداخته شده است. با تحلیل‌های صورت گرفته این نتیجه حاصل شد که در اکثر شاخص‌ها عملکرد شهر استانبول نسبت به تهران از موقعیت بهتری برخوردار است و به شکل مناسبی در جامعه شبکه‌ای و فضای جریانی شهرهای جهانی قرار گرفته است که البته به دلایل مختلف نظیر موقعیت ژئوپلیتیکی، فضای باز اقتصادی و سایر شاخص‌ها است. نتایج بررسی تطبیقی وضعیت این دو کلان‌شهر، باعث طراحی مناسب‌تر چشم‌انداز آتی این شهرها توسط مدیران در راستای تحقق شهر جهانی می‌باشد.
