کولیت اولسراتیو یک نوع از بیماری‌های التهابی روده است و افسردگی از جمله شایع‌ترین اختلالات روانشناختی در این بیماران است. این  مطالعه با هدف مقایسه شدت و عوارض بیماری کولیت اولسراتیو و راهبردهای شناختی تنظیم هیجان در بیماران کولیت اولسراتیو  با و بدون علائم افسردگی انجام شد. در این مطالعه موردی-شاهدی 272 نفر بیمار مبتلا به کولیت اولسراتیو به روش نمونه گیری هدفمند انتخاب شدند و براساس نمرات پرسشنامه افسردگی بک-2، در دو گروه بیماران با علائم افسردگی و بیماران بدون علائم افسردگی گمارش شدند و با استفاده از پرسشنامه اطلاعات جمعیت‌شناختی، شاخص ساده فعالیت بیماری کولیت اولسراتیو و پرسشنامه تنظیم شناختی هیجان مورد ارزیابی قرار گرفتند. نتایج حاصل از مقایسه این دو گروه بیماران نشان داد، بیماران با علائم افسردگی در مقایسه با بیماران بدون علائم افسردگی، علائم شدیدتر بیماری و عوارض بیشتر مربوط به این بیماری یعنی، مشکلات پری‌آنال را تجربه می‌کنند، همچنین در همه ابعاد راهبرد‌های شناختی تنظیم هیجان بین دو گروه تفاوت معناداری وجود دارد و بیماران کولیت اولسراتیو با علائم افسردگی در مقایسه با بیماران بدون علائم افسردگی نمرات بالاتری در راهبردهای ناسازگارانه تنظیم شناختی هیجان کسب کردند. با  توجه به نتایج می‌توان گفت که افسردگی و راهبردهای شناختی تنظیم هیجان از جمله مؤلفه‌های مرتبط با علائم جسمی و سلامت روانشناختی بیماران مبتلا به کولیت اولسراتیو هستند، علائم افسردگی می‌تواند با علائم شدیدتر بیماری در ارتباط باشد و راهبردهای شناختی تنظیم هیجان نیز ممکن است بروز علائم افسردگی را در این بیماران تحت تاثیر قرار دهد.
