Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate visual-spatial component of working memory and short-term memory in students with learning disorders and comparison with normal students.
30 3rd grade elementary students with learning disorders and 10 3rd grade elementary normal students were selected through multistage random cluster sampling. The instruments were Scale for Identifying Students with Spelling Learning Disability, Keymath Test, Reading Level Diagnostic Test, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), Clinical Interview and Corsi Blocks Task for assessing visual-spatial component of working memory and short-term memory. Data were analyzed by ANOVA. The results showed that there is a significant difference between students with reading, mathematics and spelling learning disorders and normal students in visual-spatial component of working memory and short-term memory. Students with mathematics disorder had lower performance in these components.  Students with learning disorders particularlymathematics disorder had deficits in visual-spatial component of working memory and short-term memory. This problem should be assessed in order to plan appropriate interventions.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the amount of performance in working memory, and also comparing the dimensions of behavioral activation system (BAS) and behavioral inhibition system (BIS) in different levels of stress. For this purpose, first, 560 persons of high school adolescent students (including boys and girls) of Hamadan's schools were selected through a multistage cluster sampling. After the initial data analysis, 87 of them, based on final score distribution (Z Standard) were chosen. Finally, in order to test the hypothesis of this study, participants were have studied to measure working memory and behavioral inhibition and behavioral activation systems. The collected data were analyzed using a Multivariate analysis of variance, ANOVA and post hoc tests. Results showed that there is no significant interaction between gender and stress variables considering the working memory and behavioral inhibition and activation system. On the other hand, results showed that high stress levels can lead to a decline in working memory function and participants with high levels of stress were also at higher level in terms of activity of behavioral activation system (BAS) and behavioral inhibition system (BIS).

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties flow metacognitions questionnaire (FMQ) on the student population took place. For this purpose, 390 students of Urmia University were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling, then flow metacognitions questionnaire (FMQ), Positive Metacognitions and Meta-Emotions Questionnaire and Meta-Cognitions Questionnaire were distributed among them to respond. After collecting data to determine the psychometric properties of the flow metacognitions questionnaire (FMQ), initially validity of the Questionnaire was assessed by Cronbach's alpha, retest and splitting coefficient, the criterion validity with Positive Metacognitions and Meta-Emotions Questionnaire and Meta-Cognitions Questionnaire. As well as its factor structure was assessed by using confirmatory factor analysis. The results of the factor analysis indicated that the flow metacognitions questionnaire (FMQ) has two factors, check the validity of the questionnaire using Cronbach's alpha, retest and splitting coefficient reflects the stability of the scale, the criterion validity of the questionnaire with other questionnaires Showed desirable discriminant and convergence validity. Overall, the findings indicated that flow metacognitions questionnaire (FMQ), has good psychometric properties in sample of student and normal population, and tool can be used in studies in the Iranian culture.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate prospective and retrospective memory and cognitive ability in three groups of personality based on reinforcement sensitivity theory. For this purpose, first, 358 students Bu Ali Sina university were selected through a multistage cluster sampling. Then Brain / behavioral Systems questionnaire were distributed among them to be answered. After initial data analysis, 51 of them, based on cluster analysis in Brain / behavioral Systems questionnaire were selected, in order to test the hypothesis of this study, participants were studied in dimensions of prospective and retrospective memory and cognitive ability. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive indicators, multivariate analysis of variance and post hoc tests. Results showed significant difference between three personality groups in memory and cognitive ability. So that, group with high behavioral inhibition system sensitivity have better performance in components of retrospective memory, prospective memory, general memory and ability of naming; group with high sensitivity of fight-flight-freeze system have higher scores in prospective memory and general memory. The results showed that more active and less active of brain/ behavioral systems may be in close relation with memory and other cognitive abilities. It seems that cognitive abilities can to be influenced by the brain systems associated with reinforcement sensitivity and thereby cognitive functions changed.

Abstract

Due to the importance of rehabilitation among children with special learning disabilities, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of brain Gym on suppression of theta/alpha ratio and working memory of students aged 8 to 12 years with dyslexia or dysgraphia. This research was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The population of this study included all girls and boys with reading or writing disorders referring to special centers for learning disabilities in Kermanshah. The convenience sampling methods were used. For this purpose, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 students aged 8 to 12 years were selected and randomly allocated into two groups of 10 people. The experimental group were received brain Gym intervention for 20 sessions of 20 minutes over 10 weeks. In order to record the brain waves of the participants, a dual-channel neurofeedback device was used. Moreover, the Wechsler memory software was used to measure their active memory. To analyze the data, univariate one-way covariance analysis and multivariate one-way covariance analysis were used using SPSS software version 26. The results showed that the ratio of theta waves to alpha in the experimental group was significantly reduced and active memory span in the experimental group was significantly increased compared to the control group (P < .05). The findings of this study indicated that brain exercise can significantly suppress the ratio of theta waves to alpha and also improve working memory among children with special learning disabilities. The findings confirm the neurological evidence for the positive effect of the brain Gym intervention on the modulation of brain waves and working memory in children with dyslexia or dysgraphia.
