Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the direct and indirect effect of perceived self- efficacy on academic stress through cognitive coping strategies. Data were collected from 435 medical science students of Shiraz University, from seven educational groups in 2009 which were selected via cluster sampling. In this study two questionnaires were used: Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Garnefski, 2001) and self- efficacy and stress Questionnaire (Zajacova, 2005). Data were analyzed using principal component analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Measured model enjoyed adequate fit indexes. On the basis of the results, self – efficacy latent variable directly and indirectly affects academic stress through maladaptive and adaptive cognitive coping strategies. People with high perceived self- efficacy tend to use adaptive coping strategies and experience lower academic stress.

Abstract

The present study examined the relationship between Self-Compassion, Self-esteem, Shame-Proneness and Guilt-Proneness with experiencing shame and guilt after reminding the experience of fault and transgression. To do so, in a quasi-experimental design, 80 students (26 males and 54 females) of the University of Tehran filled Self-Compassion and Self-Esteem Scales and Shame-Proneness and Guilt-Proneness subscales of the Test of Self- Conscious Affect-3. After shame and guilt induction by reminding and writing about an experience of fault and transgression, Participants reported their unpleasant emotions by the adjective-checklist of shame and guilt based on Tangney`s theory and the scale of unpleasant emotions. The Results revealed that shame-proneness was positively and self-compassion was negatively associated with the unpleasant emotions. Self-esteem was correlated negatively with the shame only and guilt-proneness showed no significant relationship with the unpleasant emotions. As hypothesized, self-compassion predicted unpleasant emotions that are beyond the shame-proneness and guilt proneness, while self-esteem wasn’t the predictor of the unpleasant emotions. The results were explained based on the different nature of self-compassion and self-esteem constructs.

Abstract

With the development of Brief Self-Control Scale most studies in this field has used it widely for the measurement of the general capacity of self-control. Discordant findings on the adaptiveness of self-control have brought about doubt concerning unidimensionality of this scale. The aim of the present study was to investigate the factor structure of BSCS in Iran. 247 Iranian university students (188 women, 53 men and 6 undefined) completed the following scales: BSCS, Rumination Scale, Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Vitality Scale, & Anxiety and Depression Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that one-factor structure of BSCS did not fit the data well. Explanatory factor analysis (EFA) proposed two-factor structure of the scale that fit the data well and performed better than one-factor structure in a new CFA. The results were discussed through considering the viewpoints concerning the two facets of self-control and they confirmed the need for reviewing the theories and research on the inhibitory and initiatory facets of self-control.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of five factors personality in regulating of relationship between perceived and objective stress and anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms . 390 bank managers responded five factors personality ( NEO ) , perceived stress , objective stress , anxiety and depression scals and symptoms check list . The results showed the interaction between Neurotism , Extraversion , conscientiousness mediated the relationship of perceived stress with anxiety, depression and physical symptoms . Objective stress influenced by perceived stress that emphasized on importance of subjectivity of stress. Findings showed simultaneous interaction these factors (low Neurotism , high Extraversion , high conscientiousness ) leads to a reduction in the effects of stress .

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-knowledge process (integrative self-knowledge and mindfulness) and self control in regulating of relationship between perceived and objective stress and anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms. 217 firefighters were selected by simple stratified sampling from 22 stations. They responded to integrative self-knowledge (Ghorbani et al.,2008), mindfulness (Brown & Ryan.,2003), self control (Tangeny et al.,2004) perceived stress (Cohen et al., 1983) objective stress (made in this research), anxiety and depression(Costello & Comrey.,1967) scals  and symptoms check list(Bartone.,1995). The results showed the interaction between integrative self- knowledge and self control has the most role in regulating the relationship between perceived stress and anxiety, depression and physical symptoms. Objective stress influenced by perceived stress that emphasized on importance of subjectivity of stress.Finally, Findings indicate the mediating role of self-knowledge process in relationship between stress and anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of art therapy-based education on the symptoms of overt and covert anxiety, depression, and chronic fatigue in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). The study was a quasi-experimental clinical trial with pre-test and post-test research with a control group. Univariate analysis of covariance was used for the statistical analysis of data. The study population was all patients (319 people) referred to the clinic of the special disease of Ali Ibn Abi Taleb Hospital in Rafsanjan in the age range of 18 to 55 years. At the screening stage, a sample of 40 subjects was considered who were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. Art therapy-based training classes for the experimental group were held in 14 sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, and the control group classes were held in 14 sessions (45-minute) with different content on Sundays and Mondays. The results showed that art-based education reduced the symptoms of anxiety, depression and fatigue In other words, 14 sessions of Art therapy-based training explained 30%, 11%, 22% and 11% of the variance of Explicit anxiety, hidden anxiety, depression, and fatigue.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this article is to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive therapy group training based on mindfulness on academic vitality and social health. Method: Quantitative-applied research of an experimental type with a pre-test, post-test design with a control group, and the statistical population includes all female students of the first grade of high school in Bandar Anzali city, who were randomly divided into two groups of 20 people, controlled and tested. Martin and Marsh's (2008) academic vitality questionnaires, Keyes and Shapiro's (2004) social health questionnaires, as well as the mindfulness training protocol have been used as the intervention variable of the research for data collection tools. To test the hypotheses, univariate covariance analysis was used using SPSS software. Findings: The research results showed that mindfulness training is effective on academic vitality and social health. Conclusion: Mindfulness training improves the social health and academic vitality of female students.
